So what exactly is cellulite? Cellulite is the term used to describe dimples that appear mainly in the legs particularly around the thighs and bum area
The main cause of cellulite is when collagen (protein found in connective tissue) in the skin becomes weak, damaged or too thin the fat underneath the skin will bulge through – hello cellulite! Other causes include low estrogen levels and wearing tight underwear/clothing
So the important question… how do we get rid of it
Cardio exercise and targeted weight training are a must, they will improve blood flow to connective tissue and strengthen the muscles and collagen in the skin. We will be posting the ultimate cellulite buster leg workout in a few weeks – watch this space!
Eat lots of protein rich foods as they all contain collagen helping to strengthen connective tissue. Good sources of protein include eggs, mackerel, lentils, nuts, natural nut butters and red meat
Highly processed foods/preservatives/sugar/excess caffeine are a big no no if you are looking to get rid of cellulite, they can cause hormone imbalances and increased fat deposition so all in all best avoided.
Water water water! Staying well hydrated every day (aiming for 2L) will help the skin to stay healthy and supple as well as helping your body absorb nutrients from your food.
Other ways to improve your circulation and to keep your connective tissue fed and strong is to avoid tight clothing, attend a yoga class regularly, having a nice massage and adding ginger and cinnamon to your diet.
